Hey Reader, I hope you had a fun wrap-up to the summer season! We certainly did... although ours involved a county fair, country music, corn dogs, and blackberry cobbler. π We drove about an hour to see Emily Ann Roberts perform. Now, I have to admit... I really didn't know who she was. Kevin, on the other hand? Big fan. He follows Emily Ann and her husband on Instagram and really wanted to see her perform, so off to the county fair we went! And you know what made this even more fun? Usually, I'M the one fan-girling all over the place while Kevin is just along for the ride. π This time, I got to sit back and watch him be the fan. And we had a blast! Of course, you can't go to a county fair without eating something. So naturally, we had corn dogs to support the local band AND some amazing blackberry cobbler with vanilla ice cream to support 4-H. Have you ever been inside? It's one of those places you can easily walk past while wandering Duval Street without realizing just how much history is sitting behind those doors. Cuban exiles founded the San Carlos Institute in 1871, and it became an important gathering place during Cuba's fight for independence. JosΓ© MartΓ spoke there, it served as a bilingual school, and its story is woven into the Cuban history of Key West. Good luck this month! π§ Last Week's TriviaLast week I sent you about 70 miles west of Key West and asked: What islands were named for their lack of fresh water and abundance of turtles? π’π’π’ The answer was the Dry Tortugas! But I have to tell you... One reader answered the GalΓ‘pagos Islands, and that sent ME down a trivia rabbit hole. The GalΓ‘pagos are famously associated with their giant tortoises and are incredibly dry, so I could absolutely see where that answer came from. I gave him credit. π But the answer I was looking for comes from Juan Ponce de LeΓ³n, who encountered the islands in 1513 and called them Las Tortugas because of the abundance of sea turtles. Later, "Dry" was added to warn sailors about something rather important when you're out in the middle of the ocean... There was no fresh water available. π§π« And there you have it: Dry + Tortugas.
