Back in the early ‘80s, the U.S. Border Patrol set up a checkpoint on U.S. 1 — right at the top of the Keys. Locals (understandably) were not amused. So in true Key West fashion, they declared independence and formed the now-infamous Conch Republic — tongue-in-cheek, of course, but fabulously dramatic.
