Road trip! New Hampshire, here I come πŸš—πŸ‚

Hey Reader,

I am SCRAMBLING to get everything done this week because...

I'm hitting the road! πŸš—πŸ‚

By the time you're reading this, I should be somewhere along the way to New Hampshire, where I'm heading for a conference.

I've never been to New Hampshire, so I'm really looking forward to exploring a completely different part of the country.

And yes... I did have to double-check that New Hampshire is, in fact, part of New England. πŸ˜‚

So much to learn. So little time.

You know how it is when you travel somewhere new. You want to get the lay of the land before you get there.

What do the locals eat?

What should I see?

What's the thing everyone who lives there knows about... but a first-timer could easily miss?

Of course, Mother Nature decided to make this trip a little more interesting by throwing a pretty brutal nor'easter into the mix.

Because apparently simply driving to New Hampshire wasn't enough of an adventure. πŸ˜‚

Hopefully, by Tuesday we'll be enjoying some fabulous New England fall weather. Fingers crossed! πŸ‚

So... this is where I need YOUR help.

🍁 Have you been to New Hampshire?

πŸ₯£ What do I HAVE to eat?

πŸš— Is there something I absolutely need to see?

🍺 Is there a local drink I should try?

And perhaps most importantly...

Is there any New England lingo I need to learn before I get there? πŸ˜‚

You know I'll be taking notes.

πŸ“š She Wasn't Planning to Be a Writer...

Did you catch my conversation with Miki Bennett?

Miki is the author of our September Book Club pick, Run Away to the Keys, and I loved hearing how her writing journey unfolded.

Because here's the funny part...

She had NO intention of becoming a writer.

And then...

Two book series and a few novellas later...

VoilΓ . She's a writer. πŸ˜‚πŸ“š

We talked about how that happened, her books, the Keys, and plenty more.

Even if you haven't read Run Away to the Keys yet, come hang out with us. It's a fun conversation!

πŸ‘‰ πŸ“šπŸŒ΄ Meet Miki Bennett and hear how she accidentally became an author!

πŸ“Ί No Live This Week!

Since I'll be traveling and at the conference, there won't be a Thursday night live this week.

I know... I'm messing with our schedule. πŸ˜‚

But don't worry, I'll be back!

Our next Fun in Key West Live is:

πŸ“… Thursday, October 8
⏰ 8 PM Eastern
πŸ“ Facebook + YouTube

So mark your calendar, grab your favorite island drink, and we'll catch up then. 🌴🍹

In the meantime, I'll probably be popping into Facebook and sharing a few things from New Hampshire along the way.

Because apparently I don't know how to travel anywhere without taking all of you with me. πŸ˜‚

🧠 Last Week's Trivia

Last week I asked:

🏝️ What Key is home to the only ghost town in the Florida Keys?

The answer was...

Indian Key! πŸ‘»πŸŒ΄

And there is a LOT of history packed into this tiny 11-acre island.

Back in the 1830s, Indian Key wasn't a ghost town at all. It was a thriving community built largely around the wrecking industry.

Jacob Housman purchased the island in 1831 and had BIG plans. The community eventually included homes, a hotel, store, warehouses, cisterns and wharves.

And here's one of my favorite facts...

In 1836, tiny Indian Key became the first county seat of Dade County. 😲

Think about that for a second.

This little island in the Florida Keys was once the center of government for a county that would eventually include Miami!

Then everything changed.

On August 7, 1840, during the Second Seminole War, Indian Key was attacked. Most of its buildings were burned and several residents were killed, including Dr. Henry Perrine, a physician and botanist who had been experimenting with tropical plants.

The community never truly recovered.

Today, the town is gone, but traces of it remain.

And here's what makes Indian Key even more intriguing...

It sits only about half a mile offshore near Islamorada, but you can't just drive over and explore.

There's no bridge.

You have to arrive by boat. πŸ›ΆπŸŒ΄

A deserted island...

Ruins of an old town...

A dramatic history...

Sitting just offshore in the Florida Keys?

Yep. That's my kind of rabbit hole. πŸ˜‚

❓ This Week's Trivia

Let's bring this week's question back down to Key West...

🌊 What TWO bodies of water surround Key West?

Think you know?

Hit reply with BOTH answers and you'll get an entry into this month's Fun in Key West Swag Box drawing! 🎁🌴

As always, thank you for being here.

Thank you for reading, playing trivia, watching the shows, listening to the podcast, and sharing your own stories and recommendations with me.

I love that this has become a place where I can ask, "Hey, what should I do in New Hampshire?" and fully expect some of you to have answers. πŸ˜‚β€οΈ

Next time you hear from me, I'll have officially experienced New Hampshire...

And knowing me, I'll probably come home with a list of strange history, local food, and at least one story that had absolutely nothing to do with the conference I went there to attend. πŸ˜‚

Talk soon!
