Why Is It Called the Ridley House?While I was wandering around Key West on our last trip, I spent a lot of time doing one of my favorite things... Looking at old houses. π Seriously, I could wander those streets for hours. One that sent me down a particularly good rabbit hole was the historic Richard Kemp House, which you may know today as the Ridley House. But why Ridley? Well... there's a pretty fantastic Key West story behind that name involving Richard Kemp, a sea turtle, and a scientific discovery. And once you know the story, the name of the hotel suddenly makes a whole lot more sense. π π’π‘ Come down the Richard Kemp/Ridley House rabbit hole with me!β You can read the story or listen to the podcast right from the post. π₯ And Then I Started Thinking About Rum...Which, admittedly, isn't that unusual around here. π But this particular thought sent me digging into spiced rum. What exactly makes a rum "spiced"? What brands should you know? And, of course, how does Key West fit into the story? You know I couldn't just make a list. I had to give it a little Key West flavor. π π΄ββ οΈπ₯ Pour yourself something good and explore my spiced rum rabbit hole!β And while we're talking cocktails... πΈ Watching the Carbs? You Can Still Have the Cocktail.Cocktails can be sneaky little things when you're trying to watch carbs. Juices. Syrups. Mixers. Suddenly that innocent-looking tropical drink has turned into dessert with a straw. π So I also put together a guide to keto gin cocktails, including ideas for ordering lower-carb drinks when you're out in Key West... or really anywhere. π πΈπ΄ Show me the lower-carb cocktails!β Because sometimes you want the cocktail without inviting all of its sugary friends along. ποΈ Have You Peeked at the Etsy Shop Lately?I haven't mentioned this in a little while, but I've been having fun creating Key West-inspired goodies for the shop too! You never know what might show up in the shop next! π§ Trivia Time!Last week's question was: What was the name of Ernest Hemingway's famous fishing boat? The answer was... π£ Pilar! Hemingway bought the 38-foot Wheeler boat in 1934, and Pilar became a huge part of his life during those years. He fished aboard her throughout the waters around Key West, Cuba, and the Caribbean, chasing marlin, tuna, and other big-game fish. And here's something I think is really cool... Pilar still exists. The original boat is preserved at Hemingway's former Cuban home, Finca VigΓa. So while we tend to associate Hemingway with his Key West house, his six-toed cats, and maybe a certain bar or two, some of his biggest adventures happened out on the water aboard Pilar. β This Week's Trivia QuestionOkay, let's see who remembers this little piece of Key West history...
